Rock Removal Cartridges: overview

  • Rock Removal Cartridges are non-detonating, low volatility explosives that provide you with an alternative tool for use in restricted or sensitive environments, allowing for rock or concrete fracturing that is highly controlled and highly directed.

  • The cartridges are first loaded into short drill holes before ignition with an electric match. After ignition the non-detonating propellant generates a pulse of high pressure gas into the base of the drill hole. The resulting gas then expands into microfractures in the rock or concrete causing the surrounding material to fracture.

  • The lower energy required for this kind of fracturing results in less vibration, less noise, reduced overpressure, and minimal flyrock when compared with high explosive blasting, while still delivering increased flexibility and cost efficiencies when compared to mechanical demolition and excavation methods.
